IYRS to sponsor marine industry career day Saturday, March 6th
The fifth annual marine industry career day will be held Saturday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the International Yacht Restoration School at 449 Thames St. in Newport.
The event, free to the public, is an opportunity for marine industry professionals and career seekers to meet area employers and learn about job and training opportunities in the field. This year's event will also include a special presentation by marine technology expert Nigel Calder, who will talk about green technological advances on the horizon for the global marine industry.
A leading authority on marine systems and technology and a veteran cruiser, Calder has not only published extensively on boating technology and technique, he is also working with emerging technology first-hand, having outfitted his Malo 45 sailboat with an innovative hybrid propulsion system. His experimentation has made him a central player in a $3 million European Union research and development effort on hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial and recreational vessels.
Calder's seminar will be held at 10:30 a.m. Three additional seminars will follow, including "Green Technology" at 11:30 a.m., "Finding Employment Opportunities in the Marine Trades" at 12:30 p.m. and "Funding Your Education" at 1:30 p.m.
