Before anyone should spend money driving traffic to their website with search engine optimization, a few things must be in place...
1. An attractive website with all your inventory listed and priced.
2. People capable of responding to leads in a timely manner (within minutes if possible)
3. The infrastructure or contacts needed to sell to customers outside your local marketing area such as financing and shipping resources.
4. A clear picture of the goals you want the optimization to achieve, like "sell more used boats in my state" or "sell more Bayliner parts nationwide".

Once these points are accomplished, then the process of driving leads to your dealership can begin...

How you do this varies by the person you speak with because SEO is not an exact science. It is a skill set learned over time through trial and error. In my opinion it is best to hire someone who knows the boat business and has access to your website to make word and phrase changes monthly.

I have studied SEO strategy and implimentation for over 10 years. It requires constant tweeking and you should allow a minimum of 3 months to see results.

In my 2 dealerships, I have a staff of 5 responding to internet leads on a daily basis. I am actually limiting my optimization because I need to expand my capabilities to handle them properly. Could you use a steady stream of phone and email leads? The iternet has allowed me to grow my business in a down economy.

All inventory or a representative sample?

With the internet is the primary target outside our normal market area or within?
Every piece of inventory, new, used and consignment should be advertised online and priced. The internet is another location of your store. If you want to just concentrate locally you certainly can but why? Used boats can be sold anywhere... Parts can be sold anywhere... Extended Warranties etc...
If you have two dozen boats that are all identical what is tha advantage of listed all of them?
There is no advantage if they are identical. If they are different colors then I would list each color, same for engines. Listing identical models removes any urgency for the shopper... why buy this one if there are plenty... Run your internet presence like you run your store as a general rule. As I stated earlier, establish your goals and make decisions that will result in achieving your goal...

I've had a bit of experience when dealing with building websites and that i've worked out the hard way, I now suggest to businesses before trying to drive traffic to their site through link building to go through the site and go through it again. Google have recently done an upgrade to its system that targets websites that don't have strong content or content that is scrapped from other sites. I would suggest going through the content to make sure that it is unique to your site as well as look at optimising the SEO titles of the pages and SEO descriptions of each page. Businesses will be surprised and they can improve their Google ranking just by optimising this and it is FREE.

After which I would look at starting a Facebook & Twitter again because they take time to build followers and they are FREE, then write in them everyday. Update your News and Press as often as you can send out news letters to your friends and customers sending them back to your website to read the whole story from your site. Once you have gone through the internal SEO of your site a couple of times and written a few stories then go and create links or speak to a marketing company about creating a link building campaign for you. Blog, post everyday about your site, no one knows your business or your industry like you do.
